Painting a picture with music

For the final project in 7th grade music, each group chose a painting to interpret through music.  The creativity you showed was wonderful!  Here are the compositions from room 101:

Artist Statements- Due next week

Each student needs to write their own artistic statement about the composition you are creating based on a painting.  It should be approximately a page long, typed, and double-spaced.  It must contain the following:

1) a description of the song

2) an explaination of the musical choices your group made.  Make sure to give specific reasons based on your painting.

Make sure to indclude:

1) Song title

2) Name of the painting and artist

3) Art elements (ex. color, texture, line, shapes, light/dark, layers, etc.)

You can also include other ideas that you would include in your song next time (if we worked on it longer or you did it over again.)

Carnival of the Animals

As we have been discussing in class, The Aquarium is one short installment of a larger piece of music called The Carnival of the Animals.  Written as a gift during Carnivale (Mardi Gras), Camille Saints-Saens gave his friends the gift of music and entertainment. We have spent many weeks focusing on Aquarium, but what about the rest of the animals?  Here are a few of Camille’s melodic creatures.  What do you think?  Did he capture the animals with his music?

Leave your mark on the music blog

Ladies and gentlemen, I am issuing a challenge.  This blog is looking a little drab.  I think we need to spruce it up a, give it a makeover.  To that end, I am offering the first extra credit opportunity of the year.  There are two different ways to earn extra points:

1) Rename the blog!  Right now the blog name is “Music Talk in 206.”  This made sense when music was in room 206.  Now it is no longer appropriate.  What should we call the blog instead?  Yes, “Music Talk in the Auditorium” is the obvious answer, but I want something new and different.  Post your ideas right here in the comments for this announcement by October 31st (yes, by Halloween!)

2)  Dress up the blog!  Look up above.  See that big red rectangle?  I want to replace it with some artwork.  That’s where you come in.  There is a very good reason that Ms. Mueller does not teach art. If I were to draw something for the blog banner it would not be pretty.  I do know that may of you are wonderful artists.  Use your artistic skills and create a new music themed banner for the blog.  It should be a 4-inch by 9-inch long rectangle.  You can sketch, paint, collage, you name it.  I will scan it into the computer and add the new blog name.  The deadline is also October 31st.  This will be put to a vote. All of the submissions will be displayed for you to vote on.

So there you go.  Two ways for you to leave your mark on the music blog and earn extra credit at the same time!

Looking for something?

Here are a few things you may be noticing or are looking for:

binoculars

1)  Everything looks different!  Yup, it’s true.  This blog is under renovation.  I may be changing things up every now and then until it looks just right (like the header/border at the top of the page.  It is pretty boring right now.)  In fact, I am going to be asking for your help with some of it.  Are you good at coming up with fun names?  Are you artistically talented?  I need your help!  I will give you the details in school next week.

2)  Remember, you can click on the word “Homework” up at the top of the page (under the website title) and you will be taken to the homework page.  On that page you will be able to see your homework assignments listed from the most recent to the oldest.  This is a great tool for you to ensure that you are always prepared for class.

Also, remember that I will be collecting your music notebooks in class next week.  Make sure all of your notes and homework assignments are in the notebook.  Late notebooks will be docked 25% for each day it is late.  DON’T BE LATE!  Any assingments that are missing from your notebook will receive a zero.  Let’s make it our goal for every 7th grader to earn an A or a B in music for their progress report.

Attention! Attention!!!

chorus

Canty Chorus auditions are tomorrow (Tuesday September 23rd) at 8:30AM in the Auditorium.  This will be your only chance to audition for Mr. Rivera’s chorus.  Make sure to get a permission slip or bring a note from your parent(s) giving you permission to attend.  If you plan to try out… DON’T BE LATE!!!  I would hate for tardiness to count against you!

Also, if you are interested in joining the Canty Band please come see me and I can put you in contact with the band director.  If you have ever wanted to learn to play the clarinet, flute, trumpet, saxophone, trombone or percussion (drums) this is your chance!

And so it begins…

As the school year was coming to an end in June, I began to think of new ideas for Music class for the 2007-2008 school year. Yes, I know, summer had not even begun yet! What can I say?

I was thinking of ways to incorporate technology into the music curriculum. In this age of computers and the internet, there are so many options. Currently, Canty does not have the resources (a computer lab) to allow us to do projects such as in-class online research, computer composition (writing music), or using music learning software. With the fund-raising that is being planned for this school year, this may someday become a possibility. Alas, not this year.

So what do we do in the mean time? Well, if I have learned anything as a teacher it is that, when it comes to music, students have verystrong opinions and love to share them. With that in mind I present to you the Canty 7th Grade Music Blog. This site will be used as an extension of the music room. How will we use this blog? Here is a list of just a few possible class uses:

- Discussions and topics that begin in class will be continued and extended online.

- Extra credit opportunities by posting responses to questions, posting online assignments, music reviews, etc.

- Homework explanations and deadlines posted for students and parents

- Study guides and/or review questions for upcoming tests

I hope to see many of you participating in this online music experience. This is a way for you to impact what we do and learn in the music room. Before posting your first comment, please click on the “Blog Guidelines” link to review the guidelines for participation. Be sure you fully understand the expectations of blog behavior before you proceed. Once you have done that…let the posting begin! Feel free to post a test comment under this entry. Say hi, let me know what think, and get ready to explore music in completely new way.
